"In the 1820's, most Southern states outlawed teaching African Americans to read after abolitionist texts led to enslaved people's resistance." Colette Coleman, Journalist 11/3/2020
In the 2020's, there is even a stronger urgency for our people to embrace the concept that reading, comprehension, and speech proficiency are essential to development at every stage of life.
Partnering with Indy ECHO (INDY Eastside Community Holistic Outreach), we count it a blessing to host a free community lending library at our Church. Yes, children and adults can now borrow a book about the Black experience (joy & sorrow) written by Black authors from all across the African Diaspora.
We believe "representation matters" and we are no longer satisfied with sitting on the sidelines reciting phrases. We are excited to be in the trenches offering assistance with phonics, language use, and writing skill to all that have a desire or interest to see themselves through the sounds and pictures of books.
Are you passionate about what we're doing? Let us know! We are always looking for volunteers to help us make our vision a reality. We'll help you find a way to volunteer. We're excited to have you join us!
